This year, students in grades 6th -12th will be attending ENGAGE 2018 at The Nantahala Outdoor Center located in Bryson City, NC for a one day trip experience on Thursday, October 4, 2018. Students will be transported, by bus, to the NOC campus that morning and will return to HCA for parent pick-up by 8:30 PM that evening.
Founded in 1972, NOC is located at the intersection of the Appalachian Trail and the Nantahala River in the Nantahala National Forest. Originally a roadside inn, the company has evolved into one of the largest outdoor recreation companies in the nation, hosting well over one million guests each year.
The cost of the trip is $45.45 per student and will be billed to families in October through incidental billing. The students will enjoy 3 hours of guided river rafting (life jackets and helmets are included), a hike on the Appalachian Trail, and a special time of devotion as we enjoy fun and fellowship in the midst of His beautiful creation. Snacks and lunch are provided by the school.
We will stop at Cookout in Sylva, NC for dinner. Students are responsible for purchasing their own food at Cookout. We suggest that you send $6 to $8 per child for dinner. There is an outdoor outfitters and a general store located on the NOC campus and the students will be allowed time to shop if they so choose. Extra spending money for the NOC stores is optional.
For rafting, your child will need to wear the following: for girls, a bathing suit with a tee shirt and shorts and for boys, board shorts or swimming trunks with a tee shirt and sandals with straps. You will need to send a complete change of clothes and a towel with your child(ren) so that they can change into something dry after rafting. All clothing must meet dress code requirements as stated in the Student-Family Handbook.
We recommend that students leave their cell phones at home that day so as to prevent any kind of damage to the phone. If a student chooses to bring their phone with them on the trip, HCA, nor its staff is responsible for any damage, theft, loss, etc. that may occur. Students who are not present for the trip will be counted absent from school. This trip has an important purpose and much prayer and planning has gone into the preparation. We hope that all students will attend.
As was stated in previous communications, the trip has already been paid for by the school and the deadline to inform the office of your intent to keep your child(ren) home from this trip was Tuesday, September 4th by 3:30 PM. If you did not let the office know by the deadline stated above, your account will be charged the cost of the trip.
Due to group reservation arrangements, parents are not allowed to chaperone this trip. There is a printable waiver, provided by NOC, located under Resource Documents on ParentsWeb or it can be found attached to the email communications that you received concerning this trip. This waiver MUST be filled out completely and in hand FOR EACH STUDENT (1 waiver per student) on the day of the trip for the student to be able to go. If you need for the office to print a copy for you, please stop by and request a copy. An HCA permission form, which will be located on ParentsWeb, will be available by next week. An email will be sent notifying you that it has been posted.
