Board of Governors

Haywood Christian Academy's Board of Governors is comprised of Christian leaders who have a heart for children and our community. All members serve in leadership positions at their local church. Our directors actively serve on other non-profit community organizations such as Haywood County Big Brothers/Big Sisters, The Open Door Ministry of Waynesville, Kids for Kids in India, Haywood Community College Foundation, Haywood County Economic Development Council, Downtown Association of Waynesville, Haywood County Chamber of Commerce, Haywood Regional Medical Center Volunteers, Council on Aging, Smoky Mountain Development Corporation, Waynesville Rotary Club, and Haywood County Juvenile Crime Prevention Council.

Larry Siefferman – Chairman
Larry Siefferman holds a Ph.D. in Educational Leadership from Georgia State University. He retired from the Georgia System of Technical Colleges after serving at the campus level as vice president and president. Mr. Siefferman currently serves as chaplain for the Asheville Fire Department and for the Maggie Valley Fire and Rescue Department and is the current Chairman of the Board at Haywood Christian Academy.

Dawn Small – Board Member
After retiring from a corporate executive career, Dawn Small now dedicates her time and energy to serving the community. She recently launched A.M.E.N.D. (Advocating for Mothers Embracing a New Direction) through Lifeworks, a program that trains faith-based mentors to support women striving for reunification with their children. In addition, Mrs. Small serves as a Guardian ad Litem and as a member of the Adult Care Home board through the Ombudsman program in Haywood County. Her passion for service also extends globally through volunteer work with Samaritan's Purse and the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association, where she serves as both a disaster relief worker and chaplain.

John Swanger – Board Member
Pastor John Swanger is the Senior Pastor of Calvary Road Baptist Church in Maggie Valley, NC.  He has been the Pastor at Calvary Road since 2007.  Pastor Swanger previously pastored Ochre Hill Baptist Church in Sylva N.C. and Middle River Baptist Church in Carnesville GA.  He attended Fruitland Baptist Bible College in Hendersonville N.C. from 1996-1998.

Stephen Buys – Board Member
As the Lead Pastor of The Orchard Church in Waynesville, NC, Dr. Stephen Buys is passionate about helping the Church develop to her full potential, united and mobilized for the building up of the Kingdom of God. His heartbeat aligns with that of The Orchard Church's mission – to be the church to the community. Stephen is also a speaker and author of The Doorway of Prayer, a book written to help people understand that God desires to speak and listen to them in prayer. Dr. Buys has a Bachelor of Arts in foreign language and international trade with a focus on Spanish (Mississippi College), Master of Arts in Spanish literature and linguistics (Auburn University), and PhD in organizational leadership (Liberty University).

Mike Jones is a graduate of Duke University where he received a BS in Electrical Engineering in 1964. He completed three years of graduate work at UNC-Chapel Hill studying Radio and Television Management and worked for 30 years in the computer industry serving the computer needs of the broadcasting industry. In 1997, the Lord called Mike into full time volunteer Christian work. Together, with his wife, Sally, Mr. Jones dedicated 25 years volunteering full time with Crown Financial Ministries teaching Biblical Financial Principles. As City Director in Charlotte for 6 years, they saw the Lord grow that ministry from 6 churches to over 120 churches. After moving to Lake Junaluska 22 years ago, Mike volunteered full time for New Covenant Church as administrator and business manager for about 10 years. He was ordained as a Pastor in 2011 and later as both Elder and treasurer. For many years, Mr. Jones has also volunteered at HCA, serving as a Board member and later treasurer and then Board Chairman for many years. He even taught Economics at the high school level for a semester at HCA when a teacher had to step aside due to health issues!
