How to Have Family Fun This Fall

North Carolina is a beautiful state, no matter the season. However, there is something appealing about being in the mountainous western area during autumn. With fall just arriving, we can start to see the leaves changing and the cooler weather coming.

Whether you are one who loves being adventurous in nature, gazing upon the magnificent mountains, trekking through caves and caverns or one who loves to sit down to enjoy pumpkin or apple treats, there is something for every member of your family here in western North Carolina.

7 Family Fun Activities in Western North Carolina

1. Grandfather Mountain

As summer turns into fall and the weather begins to grow steadily colder, so too does the rest of nature begin to reflect the changing seasons. One of the most beautiful aspects of this change is the changing colors of the leaves.

If you wish to get a great view of this natural phenomenon, or if your family loves hiking or even if you just enjoy watching the sunset on a beautiful fall day, then head northeast to spend a day at Grandfather Mountain.

While you are there, make sure to check out the Mile High Swinging Bridge, which you get to scale across on your way to the summit! Grandfather Mountain is always good for a day of adventure!

2. Linville Caverns

If spelunking is more in your wheelhouse, why not check out a few of Western North Carolina’s natural caverns? Linville Caverns is a fantastic spot to experience what it is like below the earth and you will see tons of natural formations formed through underground rivers.

At Linville Caverns, you get to spend the day exploring the inside of Humpback Mountain and you may even see a bat or two!

3. Pisgah National Forest

Featuring waterfalls, picnic areas and hundreds of hiking trails, the Pisgah National Forest is another great choice to spend the day with your family. With cooler weather arriving and the color of the leaves changing, being out in nature is a wonderful way to see the beauty of God’s creation.

4. Beach of Lake Lure

Although summer is over, there are still some warm days mixed in with the cooler ones. If you and your family are missing the summer beach days during one of these warmer days, now is the perfect time to treat your family to Lake Lure Beach for a day.

Now is actually one of the best times to visit, as the summer crowds have died down, leaving much of the natural beauty to be experienced more fully.

5. Darnell Farms Corn Maze, Bryson City

Darnell Farms may just be the fun adventure your family needs. It is a great place to take kids as fall is starting.

Challenge each other in the annual fall season corn maze, explore the pumpkin patch and then pick out your very own pumpkin. There is fun for the whole family with a playground area for kids and hammocks by the river for you.

6. Grandad’s Apples N’ Such

It is always a great idea to support local businesses, especially in the middle of a pandemic. One local business and fun farm to venture to is Grandad’s Apples N’ Such. It is a 100-acre farm and apple orchard, with a pumpkin patch as well.

You can pick apples, pumpkins and then visit the market for some freshly baked goodies. This includes apple pies, apple cider doughnuts, hot cider and more, and they can all be found at Grandad’s Barn and Country Store.

7. Sky Top Orchard, Flat Rock

Something that makes Sky Top Orchard stand out above the rest is the surrounding view of beautiful mountains, local animals and bamboo forests. There is a nearby pond and an area full of barnyard animals for your little ones who are animal lovers. As with any great orchard, there are fruit and apple trees, along with pumpkin patches.

This orchard has something for every member of your family; whether you love scenery, animals, bamboo, apples, or pumpkins, this orchard has it all.

This fall, treat yourself and your family by going out for a fun family adventure to a local area near you. Caverns, mountains, orchards, corn mazes, and lots of apple and pumpkin treats. Admire God’s creation, and have a blast with your family!
