With so much natural beauty surrounding Waynesville and Haywood County, it is no wonder we want to get outside and enjoy God’s Creation. Even during times of social distancing, we have many walkable paths and hiking trails in our town and county to enjoy. 

Though families may have the desire to get out and about during the school year or while they are working and educating from home, daily schedules can make it difficult to find the time to explore, while restrictions and CDC guidance may discourage even local travel. Families are always busy, and when our time is stressed, it is easy to feel like we must rely on foods we can consume quickly. We want to make sure our kids have eaten something, even if it comes from a wrapper or greasy bag. However, studies are showing that fatty and sugary foods have negative impacts on learning ability as well as health and nutrition. 

At Haywood Christian Academy, we want to stress the importance of eating well and practicing proper exercise habits, for your family’s physical and cognitive health.

It is difficult to focus while hungry. Everyone can relate to that; however, having a full stomach is not the only goal of eating. Fatty and sugary foods tend to leave children tired, lethargic, and unable to focus and retain their lessons. Meanwhile, foods that are high in dietary fiber, protein, and healthy elements improve your child’s ability to learn. Fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and protein-rich food make learning easier, while also providing many health benefits, including:

  • Proper diet and nutrition reduce childhood obesity
  • Healthy foods can reduce the risk of developing high blood pressure, heart disease, and Type 2 diabetes
  • A healthy diet provides your child with more energy
  • With more energy, your child may be more engaged in exercise activities 
  • Less sugary snacks should reduce the occurrence of cavities and dental issues
