Centrally located in the Southeast region of the United States, Haywood County can be accessed easily by plane, bus, or automobile from most major cities. Haywood County is located just 20 minutes east of Cherokee and 20 minutes west of Asheville, North Carolina.

John Haywood, North Carolina's treasurer from 1787 to 1827, was honored with the county's first name when it was first created in 1808. All of the water in Haywood County, including the Pigeon River, originates there, unlike the other 99 counties in the state. 

There are four entrances to the Blue Ridge Parkway, which circles the county and offers numerous opportunities for hiking, sight-seeing, and picnicking.

The most notable natural feature in the area is the Great Smoky Mountains. Haywood County is home to a portion of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, the most visited National Park in the U.S. The region, which is renowned for its artistic crafts, was just named a Blue Ridge Heritage District.
