how to talk to kids about schoolThe overwhelming majority of research demonstrates that kids do better in smaller classes across all disciplines and grade levels. Research shows that smaller class sizes are associated with improved long-term performance, higher teacher retention and overall student achievement, especially for younger, disadvantaged children.

The advantages of having fewer students in a classroom include the following:

  • One-on-one instruction
  • Students don’t fall through the cracks
  • Improved community and class culture
  • Better teacher/student relationship
  • Students have more opportunities to be engaged
  • Teachers can cover more material
  • The classroom is less hectic
  • Teachers are less stressed
  • Student issues are easier to identify

Given the overwhelming evidence in favor of smaller class sizes, don’t we owe it to both students and instructors to ensure that education takes place in the more supportive environment that smaller classes facilitate?

Promoting smaller classrooms should be a primary concern for educators, parents, school districts, and the government for improved academic outcomes, content teaching, and, ultimately, a more educated community.
