How Private School Benefits Elementary and Middle Schoolers

How Private School Benefits Elementary and Middle Schoolers

When considering a school, we know that parents want the best for their children. Each child is different, and each age group has different necessities.

As children develop, they go through different stages where different things become more important to them than other things. They’re changing and growing, and that means their needs are changing and growing as well.

If you are debating between public or private school for your elementary or middle school-aged child, we have seen firsthand the benefits that our students have had here at a Christian private school.

We know that there are benefits to both public and private education, but we must admit, we’ve seen so many successes through private school, we’re biased.

Reasons Why Private School Is Great for Grades K-8

There are tons of general reasons why private school is great, but do you know why those reasons are great specifically for your child and their age?

We delve into some of the why behind these benefits in this blog!

1. Class Size

The majority of the time, class sizes at a private school are smaller than that of their counterparts. Because of this, children have more one-on-one personal time with their teachers for education. They also are more likely to develop a close-knit community among their peers, with smaller chances of cliques and bullying.

One-on-one time with teachers and the community of friendships are incredibly important for children, especially when they are developing through the ages of five to eleven. In Erikson’s Psychosocial stages, this is the age of Industry versus Inferiority.

With individual investment from teachers and close peers, your child will have plenty of encouragement as they advance through their education. They’ll have teachers praising their grades and work ethic. They will have peers praising their personality and character. This, in turn, will help turn children into individuals who feel competent.

With a lack of praise at this age, children can come to grow and feel inferior to others with a lack of confidence.

2. Early Faith Development

As a non-denominational Christian private school, like many other private schools, Haywood Christian understands the importance of faith, and God is the most important thing in our lives. We work with parents to share the truth with their children throughout all of their school years.

There are several passages from the Bible that talk about the importance of Children being raised in the faith:

“Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old, he will not depart from it” (Proverbs 22:6).

“You shall therefore lay up these words of mine in your heart and in your soul, and you shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be a frontlets between your eyes. You shall teach them to your children, talking of them when you are sitting in your house, and when you are walking by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise.” (Deuteronomy 11:18-19).

This is an advantage to a faith-based private school that your child probably would not have at a public school.

3. Higher Standards of Conduct

In private school, there are often higher expectations of conduct among the students. Though there is grace, there is a balance of discipline and expectation for students. This is exactly what middle school-age students need.

At this age, students often need structure and consistency. With schedules, consistent discipline, and being faithful to your word, your child will develop a sense of safety and less stress at this age. At this age, middle schoolers are trying to figure out the changes in their body and what to make of all the hormonal developments as well. In the middle of a world that feels chaotic, the structure brings a sense of ease.
